Pregnancy: Varicose Veins

During pregnancy varicose veins can be a concern. Pregnancy changes the blood pressure, increasing the blood flow to the legs. Women are more likely to develop these if their family members have them.

Like any other time, there are some simple steps mentioned below would not only help people prevent themselves from varicose veins, but also help in preventing the re-occurrence of it along with treatment which would be mandatory.

Regular exercise is a must. Engage yourself into any kind of physical activity be it a normal 25 minutes walk, several days a week, or sports such as jogging, bicycling, swimming and many more. All these activities are essential because they not only lead to improved circulation of blood, but also strengthen ones muscles. However, before getting into any physical exercise, especially when pregnant, always consult your doctor to know if you are suffering from any other health related ailment.

Our body weight should be evenly balanced on our legs and one should be very careful not stress the body parts. For instance, if you have been standing for many hours, then it is suggested that you relax and elevate your legs for a while and then sit down with your legs left in a comfortable position giving them complete rest. Similarly, try shifting your weight alternately from the left to the right leg, as this way your legs won’t get tired.

You must not sit continuously for long hours. If at all it’s absolutely essential and you have no choice, then you must necessarily take breaks at least 4-5 times in every 2 hours. Short walks would also be beneficial in such a situation. One important point to note here is that crossing your legs is a complete No No, as this might hamper the blood circulation in the legs.

For those who are already suffering from the problem of pregnancy varicose veins , you must wear compression stockings all day long, which are easily available in medical shops.

But naturally, one must avoid wearing too tight clothes as this would again hamper the flow of blood and increase the risk of varicose veins.

High heels are another danger zone, as they stress on your buttock muscles instead of calf muscles. It is always recommended to wear flat or low heeled shoes or sandals.

Keep control on your body weight, try to eat food items rich in fiber and to strengthen your blood vessels, take vitamin c tables which have been proven to be effective..
