The abnormal, swollen veins in the legs are known as varicose veins. Common symptoms of varicose veins include itching or pain in the legs and at times a feeling of tiredness. Although there are treatment measures like injection therapies and surgery, the formation of new varicose veins is quite possible.
The walls of superficial veins go weak and hence it is considered as the major reason for varicose veins to form, however the actual cause is still unknown. At times the weakness can be considered as inherited. Due to this weakness, the elasticity of the veins is lost making them wider and longer. Hence, now the size of the veins have increased where as the space is less, causing discomfort to the veins and increasing their complexity.
Most often, varicose veins are suppose to develop during the time of pregnancy and get better after childbirth. The valve cusps tend to separate when the veins widen hence the blood flow is downwards due to gravitational pull and the valve cups can’t hold it. Due to this, the veins enlarge. The connecting veins which supply blood from the superficial veins to the deep veins tend to enlarge leading to separation of their valve cusps as well. This way the blood flows rapidly in backward moment due to which the superficial veins stretch even further.
Purpose of Valves:
The main motto purpose of the cusps is to prevent the blood from flowing in a backward direction due to the gravitational pull. This is conditional only with normal veins. In case of abnormal veins, this is not possible as the veins widen leading the cusps of the valves to separate from each other.
Enlarged capillaries, commonly known as spider veins exists in people suffering from varicose veins and even those who don’t suffer from it. Excess of blood pressure in the varicose veins may cause spider veins. However, some hormonal factors are also suppose to play a role in this which can explain the occurrence of spider veins more in women than men and especially during the time of pregnancy.
