What Causes Varicose Veins?
Veins are mainly blood vessels that carry back blood from all the organs in the body toward the heart. When various organs use oxygen present in the blood to perform their functions, they let out the used blood containing waste products (like carbon dioxide) to the veins. Blood present in the veins are then carried to the heart and returned to the lungs. It is here, the waste carbon dioxide is released and more oxygen is added to the blood and taken back to the rest of the body through arteries.
Veins can also act as storage for unused blood. When the body is at rest, only a part of the available blood in the body is used. The remaining of the blood is retained inactive in the veins and enters the active circulation .when the body becomes much active and needs some extra blood to take oxygen to whole body. This storing capacity is due to the elasticity of the walls of the veins.
Veins are of different sizes based on their location and their function. The largest of the veins are in the middle of the body, they collect the blood from various other smaller and they get smaller as they move away from the middle of the body. The veins near to the skin surface are called superficial veins. There are also various other veins that connect the superficial veins to the inner ones which are called the perforating veins.
Define varicose veins and spider veins?
Veins can increase in size with pools of blood, when they fail to transport the blood properly. These visible and bulging veins also called as varicose veins are mostly found in legs and thighs. But can easily develop anywhere in the body.
Huge varicose veins can be visible, bulging, palpable, and long and dilated (greater than 4 millimeters in diameter)
Small "spider veins" also can also be found on the skin's surface. These may look like small or thin fine lines. Most of them are typically not palpable. Spider veins are most commonly found in the thighs, ankles and feet. The medical term for them spider veins is telengiectasias.
